Rev. Sturgis Poorman is a native of Ardmore, PA. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1970 and has served churches in West Hebron, NY, Harare, Zimbabwe, and Phoenixville PA. He was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Phoenixville from 1987 to 1999. In 1999 Rev. Poorman founded Welcoming the Stranger an educational ministry with immigrants and refugees in Lower Bucks County. Since that time over 3000 adult students from 100 different countries have benefited from this program. After his retirement in 2015, Rev Poorman began volunteering with refugee resettlement programs in the Philadelphia area. He currently gives his time to Bethany Christian Services, one of the four government approved area refugee resettlement agencies. Recently, in his role as Parish Associate at Ardmore Presbyterian Church, Rev. Poorman has helped to develop “First Place”, a transitional home in Ardmore for newly arrived refugees to the US. Rev. Poorman lives in Bryn Mawr with his wife, Joanne. They have two grown sons, Aaron and Garth, and four grandchildren, Marco, Ivan, David, and Abby. See Poster.
