About
Sprout Reach is an outreach-focused environmental justice initiative hosted by St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in the Borough of Phoenixville. We create welcoming, hands-on opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to engage with nature. We bring together community placemaking, ecological storytelling, and STEM tools into one integrated model.
Through backyard birding, nature journaling, family-friendly celebrations, native habitat education, and creative use of digital observation technology, we help make nature engagement more accessible — not only for people who have easy access to green spaces, but especially for those who do not.
At the heart of Sprout Reach is our guiding motto: “What Grows Around.” We believe that what grows around us shapes what grows within us — our relationships, our neighborhoods, and our connection to the natural world.

Nature should be something everyone can experience — not just something we protect or admire from afar.
Sprout Reach believes meaningful nature engagement builds healthier people, stronger neighborhoods, and more connected communities. Our programs invite individuals and families to slow down, observe, learn, create, and explore the natural world around them.
While we’re headquartered in the Borough of Phoenixville, our educational programs and partnerships extend throughout the greater Philadelphia region.
Why Birds?
Birds are one of the most accessible ways to connect with nature.
They’re already part of our daily lives — they’re outside our windows, in neighborhoods, parks, schoolyards, parking lots, and city streets. Learning to notice birds is often like learning a new language: once you begin recognizing them, an entirely new world opens around you.
Birds create shared experiences across generations. Families can learn together. Neighbors can compare sightings. Communities can participate in citizen science. No expensive equipment or wilderness adventure is required to begin.
Although many of our programs are bird-themed, birds often serve as the gateway into broader conversations about native plants, pollinators, watersheds, biodiversity, and healthy ecosystems. Equally as important, feathery friends also serve as a gateway to place-based community connection and neighborhood enrichment.

Our goal isn’t simply to improve access to nature.
It’s to improve access to nature engagement — we create opportunities for people of all ages to actively observe, explore, document, and participate in the world around them.
Sproutsiders
Sproutsiders is an innovative educational initiative currently entering its pilot phase.
The program combines a nature journaling curriculum with STEM observatory tools while focusing on backyard birding as an accessible entry point into environmental engagement.
Participants use traditional observation skills alongside digital observation technologies to experience wildlife in new ways, document discoveries, and contribute to citizen science.
By reducing barriers to participation, Sproutsiders helps ensure that meaningful environmental learning is available to everyone — including individuals and families who may not have access to specialized equipment or feel connected to the conservation community.
Our First Backyard Nature Learning Lab
We’re transforming the community cloister garden at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Phoenixville into our first Backyard Nature Learning Lab.
Designed as a communal backyard sanctuary, the space demonstrates how bird-friendly habitats, native pollinator gardens, and technology-enhanced nature observation work together.
Visitors can explore:
